Механические свойства легких и грудной клетки и взаимодействие между этими структурами определяют уровни статических легочных объемов, а также инспираторных и экспираторных потоков как у здоровых лиц, так и у пациентов с различными легочными заболеваниями. Эти же факторы определяют то, каков будет ответ пациентов на механическую вентиляцию. Исследование механики респираторной системы необходимо, чтобы понять влияние патологического процесса на легочную функцию и возможности терапевтической коррекции респираторных нарушений. Исследование механики дыхания особенно важно у наиболее тяжелых категорий пациентов для уточнения механизмов дыхательной недостаточности.
